Settled in 1633, Windsor is Connecticut's oldest town. As an agricultural community, a thriving tobacco industry contributed greatly to the development and prosperity of this historic New England community. Some tobacco farms still exist, however business parks have lured new industry to expand the tax base.
Residents are careful to preserve the colonial appeal of their community, seeing that it has a strong civic and social spirit, along with tremendous town services. Ensuring that new construction is upheld with the overall character of town, strict zoning and planning regulations are put in place. The town also has a mixture of attractive single-family homes, garden apartments and condominiums.
Historic homes, dating back to the colonial and federal periods, are carefully preserved. The former home of Oliver Ellsworth, a member of the Continental Congress, envoy to France after the Revolution, and framer of the United States Constitution is open for tours from mid-May to mid-October. This house was visited by Presidents George Washington and John Adams in the late 1700s. Grace Episcopal Church on the green established in 1842 is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Windsor's public school system accentuates the traditional coursework and importance of individualized learning. For adults, continuing education is available in the evening.
There are a number of lovely parks, athletic fields, tennis courts, playgrounds, tennis courts and a public gymnasium, which provides activities for residents of all ages. Windsor's Northwest Park is a 473-acre, multi-recreational facility featuring an interpretive nature center, 12 miles of trails, an operational maple sugar house, the Luddy-Taylor Connecticut Valley Tobacco Museum, regularly scheduled programs, live animal exhibits and demonstrations, a gift shop and more.
For Golfers, the Tradition Golf Club The 18-hole is a semi-private golf club owned and operated by Traditional Golf Properties. The club includes a practice green, clubhouse facilities, dining and banquet rooms and a full-service pro shop.
For those who like to canoe and kayak on the Farmington River, strawberry hills park is a popular destination in the summer. The active community center promotes programs and events. Every autumn the Northwest Park Country Fair takes place. With seven exits in Windsor, Interstate 91, provides easy access to and from the city making it convenient for residents to commute to nearby business centers like Hartford.
