Community Information
The area that eventually became West Haven was settled in the 1640's but officially it is Connecticut's youngest city.
Incorporated in 1961 under a city charter establishing a mayor and town council form of government West Haven became the 169th of 169 incorporated cities and towns in Connecticut. Located just outside of New Haven it is an attractive shoreline suburban community.
Covering 10.6 square miles and offering diverse and affordable housing opportunities, West Haven meets a wide range of needs and tastes. Multi-family homes, apartments, condominiums, single family residences and historic houses are some of the options available.
Travel to large metropolitan areas such as New Haven and New York City either by rail or highway is convenient.
Within the city educational, recreational and entertainment opportunities abound. There are several private schools, adult education programs and the University of New Haven.
The West Haven parks department maintains several town beaches, a skate and bike park, pool and an ice skating rink.
