Nestled in the foothills of Litchfield County, Watertown has a superior public school system, diverse industry and several recreational opportunities for families.
Industry played a significant role in the early development and growth of Watertown and the village of Oakville, and to this day, continues to support the community. An assortment of small shops and plazas serve the retail needs of citizens, and several restaurants are available.
Even with its extensive industrial history, Watertown manages to preserve much of the New England appeal and unharmed land of its colonial days. An exquisite town green with historic architecture from many periods surrounding it is featured in the town center. Across from the green, the charming campus of The Taft School, a prominent college preparatory school, adds to the poise and beauty of the area.
The public school system in Watertown provides modern facilities and a traditional curriculum for students. Continuing education courses are available for adults in the evening. Providing private instruction is the Taft School as well as two other parochial schools.
Mattatuck State Forest and Black Rock State Park provide recreational activities including hiking and camping along with swimming and a beautiful view of nearby towns. Picnicking and water sports are provided at Echo Lake and Sylvan Lake. The town's recreation department offers a well-built youth athletic program, tennis, a summer day camp, swimming and golf at an 18-hole public golf course.
An active senior center provides a mixture of programs and events for Watertown's senior citizens, including a convenient minibus service. The Watertown Public Library has a main building located in the town center as well as in Oakville, and is also home to the Clockwork Repertory Theatre.
