The first settlers arrived in Wallingford in 1670. This picturesque community is conveniently located along the Quinnipiac River and is bordered by highlands to the west and rugged ridges to the east. Several key highways, including Interstate 91 and the Wilbur Cross Parkway are nearby.
Once a small farming community, Wallingford developed into a home for heavy manufacturing. Today the city offers diverse economic opportunities in light manufacturing, health care and research and development. Industrial parks and transitionally zoned areas support a broad array of commercial and business uses including a major pharmaceutical company research and development facility.
Occupying approximately 500 acres in town is Gaylord Hospital, an internationally renowned facility for physical rehabilitation. The Wallingford/Meriden Airport serves the needs corporate and private pilots.
To commemorate the route of George Washington who passed through the region in 1775 and again as president cement markers were placed along the center of town.
The Wallingford Parks and Recreation Department offers more than 1,000 programs each year. It oversees about 2,000 acres of ball fields, parks and passive recreation areas. Other amenities are tennis courts, private golf courses and a community pool. A popular local park is graced by a picturesque gazebo.
To preserve the suburban charm of its residential areas Wallingford carefully plans and supervises new construction. In addition to several new developments Wallingford is home to many historically significant private homes.
Community and parent involvement at all levels is stressed in the public school system. The well-known college preparatory school, Choate-Rosemary Hall, is located in town. A community child care center for children from infancy to the preschool years is located in Wallingford.
