The largest community in Litchfield County, Torrington, is enjoying a strong revitalization of its downtown and retail shopping districts. This former mill town on the Naugatuck River provides a wealth of employment and cultural possibilities to all of its residents.
Torrington's heart is its downtown, where it features new landscaping, sidewalks and paths at Coe Park. The Warner Theatre, a 1,704-seat art-deco theater that opened in 1931 as a first-run movie palace by Warner Brothers Studios, is now home to The Nutmeg Conservatory for the Arts, where it trains world-class ballet dancers. A community arts group purchased the old theater, saving it from demolition in the 1980s and restored the interior in 2002. Some of the world's finest performers are presented there now.
Torrington housing ranges from traditional single-family homes to more contemporary structures and condominiums in villages like Burrville, Drakeville, Newfield, Torringford, West Torrington and Wrightville.
Students can attend one of five elementary schools, and continue on to the middle and high schools, where the district offers a full assortment of services for all grades. A vocational technical school, Oliver Wolcott Technical High School serves students from surrounding towns. Torrington has many thrilling cultural and seasonal activities. Two weeks before the Christmas holiday, there is an enchanting Christmas Village open to the public at no cost. A Summer Arts Festival is hosted every year for a week. Members of the New England Collegiate Baseball League, The Torrington Twisters, entertain large crowds during the summertime at Fuessenich Park. At the Hotchkiss-Flyer House Museum displays a sample of earlier town life, it also includes collections of glass, porcelain and several pieces of work by American painters.
Burr Pond State Park provides picnic tables, hiking trails and a swimming hole, and John A. Minetto State Park has cross-country skiing trails for wintertime and a fishing pond.
