Thomaston traces its name and the nickname of "Clock Town" to the famed Seth Thomas, a 19th century American clock maker who opened his factory here. Settled as a tiny farming village with some light industry, Thomas' establishment of the clockworks and mass production of brass transformed the town into a lively manufacturing center.
Today, Thomaston continues to support an assorted collection of industries, and offers sufficient room for commercial expansion. Enterprises provide employment to many residents in town. Thomaston also retains the attractive New England atmosphere of earlier days, and provides a convenient location for professionals who travel to Waterbury, Torrington and Hartford on Route 8, Route 6 and Interstate 84.
Extensive shopping opportunities offer exceptional goods and services to citizens and residents of nearby towns. Thomaston's public school system consists of three schools; Black Rock School until third grade; Thomaston Center school until sixth grade; and Thomaston High School, which also serves seventh and eighth graders. The schools are well known for their precise academic and competitive athletic programs.
A public library houses enlightening and enjoyable materials for all ages, and a senior center sponsors programs and events for senior citizens. The Thomaston Historical Society's museum has a display of farm tools, clothing, home furnishings and antique clocks from the Seth Thomas era.
State parks and the local recreation department provide plenty of outdoor activities in Thomaston. Available at Black Rock State Park and Mattatuck State Forest are hiking trails, nature study and quiet relaxation. Picnic areas are located near the Thomaston Dam and Northfield Dam. A public beach, tennis courts, ball fields and playgrounds offer an assortment of individual and team sports, open play and aquatic fun.
