Suffield is a small agricultural community located on the Connecticut River and Massachusetts border in north-central Hartford County. In 1674 Suffield was incorporated by Massachusetts and 79 years later it was annexed to Connecticut, when it was among the world's largest tobacco supplier. In 1810 the first cigar factory in the country opened here.
Residents take pride in preserving their distinctive New England village, which features an exquisite green and Main Street sprinkled with 18th and 19th century homes. New homes are emerging in outlying areas of town and around existing historic architecture. Captivating Suffield Village is quintessential early America with charming examples of colonial and Victorian architecture, tree-lined streets and small, attractive shops.
Residents have made a considerable investment in their public school facilities, which include two elementary schools, a middle school and high school. Serving students from across the United States and many foreign countries is Suffield Academy, a boarding and day high school.
The Parks and Recreation Department offers recreational, educational, athletic and social programs to residents of all ages. The Suffield Players, a community theater, does three productions each season at historic Mapleton Hall located in northeast Suffield, and an arts council sponsors local artists exhibits and receptions.
Interstate 91 provides easy access to urban areas like Hartford and Springfield, and a 15-minute travel to Bradley International Airport.
