Stamford is an exciting place to live, work and play. This cosmopolitan center is teeming with successful enterprise and cultural enrichment. An explosion of corporate headquarters in the 1980s catapulted this already thriving community to international recognition.
The city boasts distinguished commercial and residential districts, which are both aesthetically pleasing and impressive. The stream-lined architecture of the downtown area provides luxurious space for corporate offices, retail stores and residential units. The Stamford Town Center Mall downtown provides over 100 shops and restaurants nestled in a pleasant indoor environment, and there are dozens more storefronts in the city center.
Despite its built up downtown, Stamford maintains its New England charm. Panoramic views of Long Island Sound, pastoral meadows, and thickly-wooded areas are the captivating backdrops for a wealth of lifestyles, including elegant contemporaries, traditional colonials, sprawling ranches and deluxe condominiums. A variety of waterfront properties range from inviting cottages to the stately residences of Shippan Point.
The town's proximity to Interstate 95 and the Merritt Parkway facilitate travel within the city and to outlying areas. Public transportation is easily accessible via three stops on the Metro North Railroad for commuters and bus service offered by CT Transit.
Stamford's dedication to its children and active community involvement is seen in it's extensive public school system. The city also has several private schools, two state charter schools and three college campuses.
The city has abundant leisure and cultural amenities. Boat tours on the river offer a special glimpse of the cities charm as well as the full range of outdoor activities at Cove Island Park. You can enjoy a two-hour ecological cruise of Long Island aboard Sound Waters, a replica of a 19th-century schooner. The splendid natural terrain at inland parks and along the pristine coastal beaches of Long Island Sound offers virtually every activity.
The Barlett Arboretum and Gardens is ninety one acres of walking trails, wildflowers and woodlands. For golfers, the E. Gaynor Brennan Municipal Golf Course is a public 18 hole, 5900 yard course with a reasonable green fee, restaurant, snack bar, practice green and a pro shop offering club rentals and instruction.
The community also generously supports and promotes the arts. The Stamford Arts Center encompasses ballet, the symphony and drama. The Connecticut Grand Opera and Orchestra presents a full season of operatic and orchestral performances.
