Southbury is a pleasant town offering families, singles and seniors opportunities to enjoy a vigorous lifestyle in a quiet, stunning and carefully planned community along Interstate 84.
Located in the western region of New Haven County, Southbury covers about 40 square miles. Reminding visitors and residents of Southbury's prosperous past are historic villages, museums, homes and memorials, also including its important place as an encampment site for heroes from the Revolutionary War, as well as a shady summer getaway for noteworthy literary figures.
Previously a Pomperaug Indian Trail, historic Main Street North, showcases the impeccable architecture of the town's first homes. One of the oldest school buildings in the country is Bullet High School, which operated from 1689 to 1942. Now it is a unique classroom museum that invites local students to know-how a typical 19th century school day. Russian Village is a collection of small charming homes that were originally settled by immigrants feeling the Russian Revolution, which was designed by the son of Leo Tolstoy.
Heritage Village, located in Southbury, is one of the first largest and significantly successful age-restricted condominium communities in the Northeast. Southbury features several unique and amenity-filled housing preferences for older adults, along with a thriving senior center.
Families also benefit from Southbury's outstanding dedication to its residents' quality of life. The town has a new public library, well-maintained ball fields, tennis courts, parks, two golf courses and generous expanses of open space.
Camping, hiking and fishing are offered at Kettletown State Park. Lake Zoar includes a boat launch and beach on the shore and serves town locals and several visitors from nearby communities. Southbury has numerous town parks and land trust properties along winding rivers, as well as the Bent of the River Audubon, which is a sanctuary for birds and other wildlife.
Southbury students attend Regional School District 15, along with Middlebury. The district's students are among the top performing in the region, based on standardized test scores. Southbury's educational system includes two elementary schools, one middle school and a regional high school. The elementary school located in Middlebury, Long Meadow Elementary School provides academic programs for students in both towns.
