The history of Norwich is a captivating tale of flourishing 18th century industrial America. Norwich, settled in 1659 on the Thames River, grew quickly into a main industrial center of textile mills, gun manufacturers and shipbuilding firms. The entry of additional manufacturing enterprises boosted the wealth and assortment of this active town even further.
Norwich enjoys an stimulating renaissance, including a redeveloped waterfront and restored historic district. Rising developments including renovations breathing new life into some of the community's most remarkable and unique architecture, including elaborate Victorian mansions and splendid colonial homes. 18th and 19th century buildings are converted into unique corporate offices and retail institutions in the town's downtown area. Also springing up around town is new construction.
Reflecting Norwich's prosperous past are museums and historic landmarks. The Revolutionary War Office of George Washington is among the popular points of interests in towns, as well as the John Baldwin House; a fine collection of European and American Art and memorabilia at the Slater Memorial Museum. In addition, Norwich claims dubious honor as the birthplace of Benedict Arnold.
Providing additional opportunities to the region's culture and history are a children's zoo, Mohegan Park, Uncas Leap at the Yantic Falls and the Mohegan Indian Burial Grounds.
