Rich in New England charm, New Milford is a delightful town with pleasant neighborhoods and active community spirit. By area it is the largest town in our state at nearly 62 square miles. Just a short distance away are Urban centers like Danbury and Waterbury. The main highways in town are Route 7 and Route 202.
It is a town filled with open meadows shaped by the agricultural heritage of the area. Surrounded by natural beauty, the homes are set on spacious lots. Architectural styles and sizes include historic structures, clean-lined contemporaries, traditional single-family homes and condominium complexes. Dotting the shores of Candlewood Lake are summer cottages. Gracious period homes are featured on the town green, many of which are now used as offices. In the down are located boutiques, antiques shops and fine restaurants with Route 7 having many national retailers.
The town had its beginnings in 1707 when John Noble Sr. of Westfield, Massachusetts and his daughter Sarah Noble settled there. They were soon joined by others who had also bought land there. In 1711, twelve families petitioned the General Assembly to create the town. With the legislature's approval, the town was organized in the following year.
Roger Sherman lived in town before moving on and becoming a member of the Continental Congress and later signing both the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution. The present Town Hall occupies the lot of his former home. The town sent 285 men to fight in the Revolutionary War.
In the latter part of the 19th century many industries came to town including factories making varnish, hats, pottery, dairy products, and paint. Tobacco became the main crop and storage warehouses sprouted up to process the crop.
Some historic sites in town include Boardman's Bridge, The Carl F. Schoverling Tobacco Warehouse, Housatonic Railroad Station, J.S. Halpine Tobacco Warehouse, Lover's Leap Bridge and the United Bank Building. Notable residents have included Bill Blass, Bob Costas, Diane von Furstenberg, Henry Kissinger, Joan Rivers, and Theodore White. Movies filmed in town include Halloween II, Retribution, Mr. Deeds, All Good Things, The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, and Seepage. In addition, the house that inspired the 1946 novel and 1948 film, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House, still stands in the Merryall section of town.
New Milford has including a modern high school with extensive athletic facilities. The private Canterbury School is a well-known Roman Catholic boarding school offering cultural and athletic events for the community to enjoy. The Jose M. Ferrer Memorial Carillon is featured in the school's chapel.
A variety of theaters, museums and galleries celebrate the arts and history of town . The Village Fair Days Festival occurs yearly with traditional crafts, music, food and attracts crowds from across the region. Holiday festivities bring the whole town together for a carol sing at the Bandstand on the Green. The Elliot Pratt Nature Center delights nature lovers in the vast areas of unspoiled land for hiking, picnicking and wildlife study. The parks and rec department sponsors organized team sports, supervised play, ice skating and swimming. A beautiful beach and a variety of water sports are found at Candlewood Lake. The Buck's Rock Performing and Creative Arts Camp is an educational summer camp located in town.
