Community Information

New Canaan is located in the southwestern corner of Fairfield County. It is a prosperous community offering comfortable living, splendid social and cultural amenities, along with an award winning education system.

The community is one of the most affluent towns in the United States. CNN Money has ranked New Canaan first in the nation with the highest median family income.

New Canaan provides convenient travel by train or auto to nearby metropolitan centers like Stamford, White Plains and New York City. Extensive gorgeous estates showcase grand country houses with lovely traditional New England stone walls. A wealth of architectural selections include deluxe condominiums, sleek contemporaries and delightful early colonial homes. The village offers the select merchandise of specialty shops and superb restaurants.

Architect Philip Johnson designed his famous Glass House, built in 1949, which officially became a National Trust site open to the public in 2007. Constructed almost entirely of glass, Johnson had no need for windows in this building. The house blends with the surrounding countryside, blurring the line between the natural and man-made. Definitely a must-see for fans of modern art and architecture.

A unique nineteeth century stone barn, restored on a former estate is home to the exceptional exhibition and performance space of The Carriage Barn Arts Center. The Carriage Barn hosts several premier art exhibitions annually.

The town takes pride in the solid academic education obtainable at its public schools. As of late, the five schools underwent a multi-year renovation, and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges gave the district a "superb" rating, its top categorization. Continuing education courses are offered to adults.

Keeping residents active throughout the seasons are four well-appointed recreation centers, which include a YMCA, numerous beautifully landscaped public parks, ball fields, tennis courts and skating ponds. A private country club hosts a range of social events and maintains a challenging course for golfers. An amusing nature center offers everything from sheep shearing to maple syruping. Developed in 1912, the town-owned Waveny Park built on an old summer estate, includes a mansion and 300 acres of parkland.

Social and cultural organizations flourish in the town, and comprise an active historical society, Audubon society, garden clubs and newcomers club. The Silvermine Guild and local artists fund many creative courses, and their annual art show catches the attention of visitors from around the state. Exhilarating Broadway musicals are produced by local theater groups.

New Canaan's public school district includes five schools, three of which are located on the same street in the southwestern area of town. The high school has an extensive athletic complex and a drama department that produces two musicals yearly.

An energetic historical society, art society and community chorus promote the town's avid involvement in culture and the arts.
