Equidistant from Hartford and New Haven and set on the Connecticut River, Middletown's name truly fits. In the 19th Century, Middletown was the largest city, and began as a prominent manufacturing and trading center, as well as a bustling fishing and boat-building port.
Housing today in Middletown presents a lovely blend of downtown apartments, riverfront condominiums, new construction and quiet suburban neighborhoods. The community offers a broad selection of architectural styles, sizes and prices.
Boasting an extensive public school system, Middletown is made up of elementary schools, an intermediate school, a middle school and vocational agricultural and technical programs at the high school level. Private secular and parochial schools are also available including numerous pre-kindergarten programs.
Residents enjoy the advantages of having two higher education institutions within the community: they are Wesleyan University and Middlesex Community College. The Wesleyan Center for the arts and the Davison Art Center offer appealing cultural and educational programs and activities. Middletown is also home to KidCity, a popular, hands-on children's museum as well as other art galleries.
The scenic Connecticut River runs through Middletown and throughout the summer months, it provides residents with a wealth of exhilarating water sports and peaceful pleasures.
