The unspoiled natural setting of this quiet, New England town offers country living and easy access to metropolitan activity in nearby Hartford, Norwich, New London and Willimantic.
Two American presidents, James Monroe and Andrew Jackson, visited John Sadler's Tavern and Inn, a rest stop for colonial travelers. A reproduction of the tavern is part of the Marlborough Country Barn complex, which offers quality Early American furniture and home decorations.
Residences, some with frontage on Lake Terramuggus, are set on winding country roads and beautiful wooded lots. Home styles range from renovated early Americans to older colonials and contemporaries. Commercial growth is beginning to develop in the town's industrial park off Route 2, although strict land use laws will assure new buildings are consistent with the town's rural charm and character.
Numerous dedicated civic organizations, a library, senior center and an arts center and museum offer social and cultural programs for residents of all ages. The Salmon River State Forest, which comprises 6,000 acres in five towns, including Marlborough, has field sports, fishing, hiking, picnicking and mountain biking. Marlborough is part of Connecticut Regional School District 8. Local children attend an elementary school in town, followed by the regional middle and high schools in Hebron. An active youth services bureau supports the health and well-being of children.
