The namesake of President James Madison, the town of Madison is located a short distance from New Haven. Madison is primarily a residential and summer vacation community. Its lovely coastal setting showcases some of Connecticut''s most elegant oceanfront homes and summer cottages, as well as a collection of gracious colonial and federal period homes. Newer houses and enticing summer rentals are also available. The Green, the heart of the town''s historic district, is surrounded by meticulously maintained houses, some of which date back over 300 years. The Green is also the site of summertime concerts, art and antique exhibits, and drum corps and muster demonstrations.

Madison''s school system features a college preparatory program, adult continuing education and a special curriculum for disabled students. Private schooling is also offered in town.

The splendid natural resources of Madison provide an abundance of outdoor fun. Private and public beaches, including Connecticut''s largest state beach - Hammonasset Beach State Park, offer summertime swimming, sunbathing and water sports.
