Community Information

Hamden is often referred to as "Land of the Sleeping Giant", by residents of Connecticut because of the intriguing rock formation in Sleeping Giant State Park, located in the Mount Carmel section of the town. The formation resembles an enormous reclining figure, which can be visible from most of the town and beyond. There's an abundance of hiking trails and picnic areas including the tower trail to the stone tower where you can catch a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside.

With close proximity to business and commercial centers, Hamden is an excellent location for quit and convenient suburban life. The Homes in Hamden represent a wide selection of sizes and design styles for every need. The town has lovely condominiums, apartments, large, modern structures and older colonials within distinct neighborhood settings.

The cultural center of the community is The Miller Library complex. Named after a local playwright, Thorton Wilder Hall often hosts concerts, lectures, arts festivals and children's programs.

The Eli Whitney Museum creator of the cotton gin preserves the roots of the industrial revolution that changed the country and the world . This is a beautifully classic New England setting with a waterfall and covered bridge.

Whitney constructed stone houses for his employees in the nearby area - Whitneyville - and is believed to be the first example of employer-provided housing in the United States. In 1806, the dam that Eli Whitney built at the mill site was enlarged to create a reservoir, Lake Whitney. The New Haven Country Club golf course is an 18-hole regulation length golf course. This medium-length layout has 3 sets of teeboxes for a challenging and fun golfing experience. The Laurel View Country Club has large, undulating fast greens with water hazards (streams and ponds) coming into play on five holes.

The Farmington Canal formerly allowed ships to travel from New Haven northward, passing through the city between 1825 and 1848. The canal right-of-way has become, a popular walking and bicycling trail, passing through some of the well-preserved locks of the canal, as well as some of the cities oldest sites.

The city has a Dog Park which is a completely fenced in area with a brick path and patio, with a separate small dog area with its own entrance.

Plenty of outdoor space is available for year-round sports and leisure from the large areas of undeveloped land.

With diverse educational opportunities, Hamden has Eli Whitney Technical High School and a modern high school. Hamden is also home to three inter-district magnet schools, a public charter school, numerous private schools and Quinnipiac University, a growing university with programs for undergraduates and graduates.
