East Hampton has a tradition of commitment to it's residents exemplified by a pleasant mix of light industry and pastoral rural living.
East Hampton is made up of three separate villages. Early industry in these villages consisted of a thriving boat building and marine center in Middle Haddam, cobalt mines in Cobalt and East Hampton was home to prominent bell manufacturers.
The bell industry was founded in 1808 in East Hampton and once had 30 bell-making firms. The village earned the nickname Belltown U.S.A. because it created some of the oldest and most spectacular bells in U.S. history.
Mostly a residential community the East Hampton of today has impressive number of elegant historic homes, traditional and contemporary designs in a variety of sizes and prices. There are also modern apartments and condominium complexes.
East Hampton is home to two public libraries and two museums. It has its own public school district with four schools serving children in kindergarten through grade 12. The nearby communities have colleges, such as Middletown which is home to Wesleyan University.
One of Connecticut's largest inland water bodies, Lake Pocotopaug covers 512 acres in the town and offers fishing, boating and swimming. State parks and forests are available on the northern, southern and western borders along with the famous Comstock Covered Bridge across the Salmon River. Local parks have varied recreational programming for all ages including volleyball and tennis.
