Darien is well-liked option for executives, professionals and their families because of it's blend of seaside living and easy commute to major corporate centers. It's less than an hour's drive to Manhattan, less by train.

A bedroom community with relatively few office spaces, most workers commute to the adjacent cities with many working in New York City. Two Metro North railroad stations - Noroton Heights and Darien - link the town to Grand Central Terminal and the rest of the New Haven Line.

Originally part of Stamford, it was mostly a summer retreat for wealthy New Yorkers who built beach cottages that still dot the coast. The privacy and beauty were well-kept secrets until 1920 when prosperous artists and writers uncovered the natural beauty of this Long Island Sound community. Today it's a suburb of New York that boasts incredible waterfront properties, large country estates, contemporary residences and grand Victorian homes.

Darien High School has a $73 million campus and is one of the many award winning public schools. A steady hub of activity, the Darien library ranks as one of the top ten libraries for its size. It has the highest per capita circulation in the state and approximately 169,000 books.

The historic Bates-Scofield House includes an herb garden with over 30 varieties of herbs used during the 18th century and over 20 varieties of historical roses. A saltbox built in 1736 featuring a massive central chimney, large fireplace and beehive oven, visitors find 18th and early 19th Century regional furniture.

For town residents leisure and sporting activities abound. Darien's immaculate beaches provide swimming, water-skiing, windsurfing and sunbathing. There are public and private marinas for fishing and boating enthusiasts. Equestrian sports are very well-liked here. An annual qualifying event for the National Horse Show is sponsored by The Ox Ridge Hunt Club.

Commuter convenience is served by two Metro North railroad stations and easy access to Interstate 95 and the Merritt Parkway. Picturesque boutiques on the Boston Post Road and local shopping centers are promoted by the Chamber of Commerce.
