The first settlers arrived in the area in 1695. The town was founded in 1698 and the official adoption of the name Colchester occured in 1699.
Soon after the first Hartford-New London turnpike was opened in 1800 the town of Colchester became a nucleus of local throughways. The roads led to an influx of industry including manufacturers of paper and textiles.
Colchester is a convenient and pleasant place to live because of it's central location and rural setting. The housing around town ranges from gracious older residences to beautiful new homes.
The school system has a comprehensive education program, and includes adult education classes. Activities for children of all ages and adults are sponsored by the recreation department. Cultural activities, shopping, entertainment as well as Foxwoods and the Mohegan Sun casinos are only a short drive away.
