Wagon and stagecoach drivers used to pay tolls to pass through Brookfield. In the 1700s, roads were dotted with gristmills, sawmills, a paper mill and hat and knife factories. All that is left from the industrial age is the gristmill on the Still River, restored to a crafting co-op for area artisans. However, Brookfield Center maintains its historic appeal with spacious, historic homes and period architecture.
Brookfield, tucked between Candlewood Lake and Lake Lillinonah, it offers privacy of country living and the convenience of close by highways. Two major highways Interstate 84 and Route 7 offer easy access to Stamford, Wilton and Norwalk, as well as White Plains, N.Y., and New York City. With a 15-minute drive away, one can reach the train stations along the Metro North.
Brookfield, one of the fastest growing communities in Fairfield County, is filled with contemporary homes along its countryside.
Brookfield's school system offers a broad range of programs that address the individual desires and interests of each and every student. A large senior center provides a variety of activities and trips for Brookfield's fastest growing portion of its population.
Practically every modern convenience is available along Federal Road, which runs parallel to Route 7. Set in a restored gristmill is the Brookfield Craft Center and offers a diverse selection of crafts and artwork including sculpture, pottery, needlework and weaving. It has also won an international acclaim for excellence. Rounding out Brookfield's cultural offerings is the theatrical presentation of the Brookfield Players along with a fine public library.
A summer concert series along with 5K road races are sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department, which also maintains the parks, ponds and other open spaces. Offering fishing, hiking trails, picnic tables and plenty of parking is Lillinonah Woods, 68 areas on Lake Lillinonah.
