Bridgeport has enjoyed a rebirth with the opening of new professional baseball and hockey venues, plans for corporate offices and new commerce and banking centers in the downtown area.

Founded in 1821 on the scenic shores of Long Island Sound, Bridgeport is one of the oldest urban communities in North America as well as Connecticut's largest manufacturing city.

Bridgeport has over 500 industries and businesses that provide products and services, as well as employment to its many residents and the surrounding communities. Located at the intersection of Interstate 95 and Route 8, it has a stop along the Amtrak and Metro North railroad lines, with continuing service to Boston and Grand Central Station in New York City as well as ferry service to Long Island.

Called the Park City, Bridgeport is home to more than 25 parks and community gathering places, including Pleasure Beach, which is a sanctuary to endangered piping plover birds. This beach is accessible only by foot from the mainland.

The Beardsley Zoo is the state's only zoo. It has more than 300 species of animals, an indoor carousel carousel and has an indoor rain-forest and one of the largest greenhouses in Connecticut. Rare animals of North and South America are on display on 52 acres along the shore.

This city also is a flourishing cultural center. The Community Symphony presents various performances throughout the year since 1945.
