Barkhamsted is located only 35 minutes from Hartford in northern Litchfield County. It's a peaceful, country town with carefully preserved and renovated 18th and 19th century buildings. Quaint historic homes grace residential areas and new homes are sprinkled through the countryside. The town is made up of two villages: Riverton and Pleasant Valley.
Barkhamsted's rural beauty is preserved by thousands of acres of state forest. The 2,942-acre Peoples State Forest, the 782-acre American Legion Forest and the Barkhamsted Reservoir provide a playground for nature lovers. Outdoor activities include hiking, camping, fishing, boating and a public beach for swimming during the warmer months, as well as snowmobiling and skiing in winter. Fishing, canoeing and swimming can be done along the Farmington River
Pleasant Valley School is the only school available in town. Middle and High school students from Barkhamsted and the surrounding towns of New Hartford, Colebrook and Norfolk attend Northwestern Regional School District 7. The schools give students a strong, well rounded academic program and continuing education for adults.
A very large collection of community records and historical artifacts are maintained by the Barkhamsted Historical Society volunteers and shared with residents.
